Vanesa Magar es licenciada en física (1996) por la UNAM, maestra en estudios avanzados en Matemáticas (1997)  por el Departamento de Matemáticas Aplicadas y Física Teórica (DAMTP), y doctora en Mecánica de Fluidos (2001) por el DAMTP de la Universidad de Cambridge, Inglaterra. Obtuvo contratos posdoctorales en la Universidad de Cambridge, UK (2001-2002) y la Universidad de Bangor, Gales, Reino Unido (2002-2005). Trabajó en la Universidad de Plymouth, Inglaterra, como miembro académico distinguido “academic fellow” (2005-2010) y como docente-investigador (2010-2013) en Ingeniería Costera. Se incorporó al Centro de Investigación Científica y Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) en Enero 2014, en el Departamento de Oceanografía Física. Desde 2008 empezó a colaborar en proyectos de energías renovables marinas en la Universidad de Plymouth, en donde supervisó a cuatro estudiantes de maestría y uno de doctorado e impartió cursos en el primer programa de maestría del Reino Unido en el tema, creado en 2010 en la Universidad de Plymouth. Actualmente participa en proyectos de energías renovables con beneficios compartidos en vinculación con comunidades y  docentes rurales y el sector privado, así como en proyectos de energías renovables marinas. También trabaja en transporte de sedimentos y morfodinámica en zonas costeras. Es editora académica de la revista indizada PLOS ONE desde Agosto de 2011 y editora asociada de la revista “Frontiers in Marine Science” desde 2014. Ha sido co-autora o editora de más de 100 artículos en revistas indizadas y de divulgación, así como de varios resúmenes arbitrados y 5 capítulos de libro. Ha supervisado o co-supervisado a 13 estudiantes de maestría y a 4 estudiantes de doctorado hasta su graduación. De 2010 a 2014 fue miembro del Consejo Nacional de Investigación del Medio Ambiente (NERC por su siglas en inglés) del Reino Unido, es matemático certificado desde 2008 y miembro distinguido “fellow” desde 2011 por el Instituto de Matemáticas y Aplicaciones (IMA por sus siglas en inglés) del Reino Unido, y miembro del Instituto de Física (IOP por sus siglas en inglés) del Reino Unido. Es actualmente secretaria general de la Unión Geofísica Mexicana (2016-2017), y miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores Nivel I. En su tiempo libre le gusta cocinar, leer, dar paseos, ver a amigos y pasar tiempo con la familia. Es emprendedora social, y etóloga amateur.
